Whether you are a seasoned veteran in the martial arts community, or if this is your first time looking at martial arts schools...everyone has questions - and you should. Trying to find the right school for you can be frustrating and confusing. All of the different styles and arts can overwhelm anyone. This page will hopefully answer most of your questions and give you a better idea of how UMAA of Cary operates. If you still have questions after reading these F.A.Q.'s, you can contact us and we will assist you with your questions.

Are You a Full Time or Part Time School? - UMAA of Cary is a licensed, insured and accredited full time school. The dojo is open to members and guests 55 hours per week. We're open Monday - Thursday 10:30am - 9:30pm and Saturdays from 9:00 - 2:30.

Do You Teach Children and Adults Together? - The classes are structured so that the kids will be in the dojo, and training at different times than the adults. We do allow parents to train with their children, but our curriculum is set up to teach kids and adults separately.

Is The Owner On Site? - The owner of UMAA, Anthony Letourneau, is on site full time and is very much involved with the daily operations of the school as well as teaching classes. He is available to anyone that wishes to speak with him about the school and is also on the floor leading classes.

How Long Has The School Been In Operation? - UMAA of Cary opened July 1st, 1998 and has been in operation since that time. We have been in our current location since December 2010. The owner, Anthony Letourneau, combined his 3 part time programs into one full time program in December 2010 and continues to run the daily school operations and classes.

What Is The Difference Between Karate and Taekwondo? - Karate (meaning "open/empty hands) has roots in Japanese and Okinawan culture. The word "Karate" is an umbrella term that covers a variety of different styles of self defense and martial arts development that use the hands and feet. Taekwondo is the Korean style of martial arts and it mainly uses the feet/legs with very little emphasis on the hands. Okinawan and Japanese karate focuses equally on the hands and feet.

Can I Try Some Classes? - We insist that you try any and all classes offered here for 2 weeks. We will not accept a new student unless they are taking or have completed the 2 week trial. This serves three purposes. First, you will get to attend every age appropriate class we offer here, unlimited, for 2 weeks. This way you can see for yourself just what we offer and how the classes will be structured. Second, during the 2 week trial we are working with you and evaluating your attendance and performance to see if this will be the right place for you. We do not accept everyone as a student, but the ones that we do accept end up staying with us for years. Third, at the end of the 2 weeks you will know exactly how many days per week you can attend classes, based on your home life schedule, and this will help us place you in the appropriate membership.

Do I Have To Sign a Contract? - Karate International requires all students to enroll for classes on a maximum term base (i.e. 12 months) and to sign a contract. Our contract is in place solely to satisfy the requirements from our insurance provider. We allow for early release from any contract, for any reason, at any time. This is written into the membership enrollment forms and clearly spells out the policy. We also do not sell our contracts to third parties, which keeps all of the information you provide 100% safe and secure.

How Much Does It Cost? - The tuition is based on several criteria: (1) which program(s) / class(es) you want to attend; (2) how many people in your family/house will be attending classes; (3) if you are eligible for discounts (military, student, teacher, law enforcement, retired). We base our tuition schedule on the fact that all of the instructors are professional, certified Black Belts and all Karate classes are overseen and instructed by a master level instructor (7th degree black belt). All of the head instructors for the various programs here are master level in their respective arts. We only allow the absolute BEST and QUALIFIED instructors to lead classes.
